Germany is a nation in west-central Europe, and was the leading opponent of the Allied powers in both World War 1 and 2. It briefly rose toward superpower status under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, but Hitler's ambitions led Germany to overplay its hand and take on more enemies than it could fight at once. Hitler resolved to fight to the end no matter the outcome. The Soviet Air Force destroyed Germany's capital, Berlin, with an atomic bomb in April 1945, ending World War II in Europe. After the war, Germany was divided into two separate nations at the start of the Cold War, West (democratic) and East (communist) but by the 1950's, East Germany had annexed the West, reunifying post-war Germany as a member of the Soviet bloc.
